Independent scientific verification for forest connected supply chains

World Forest ID is an independent non-profit that turns peer-reviewed science into practical verification tools. We help regulators, certification schemes, and companies assess whether a traded product’s declared harvest origin is consistent with independent reference data. Origin testing works because trees and plants carry chemical signatures shaped by where they grew. By collecting and analysing georeferenced reference samples from known locations, World Forest ID builds spatial models that help test origin claims with independent scientific evidence. Backed by a growing consortium of public research institutions, World Forest ID combines non-proprietary science with practical tools designed for real-world decisions.

How the process works

obtain useable sample

To enable testing, we need a real-wood sample large enough for laboratory analysis, and a clear claim with both a declared harvest origin and species or genus.

Testing & evaluation

A laboratory measures the sample’s chemistry. The Evaluation Platform compares the results against World Forest ID reference data built from georeferenced samples.

Evaluation Report

The Evaluation Platform generates a report assessing whether the sample is consistent with the claimed harvest origin, based on scientific evidence.

Backed by members, supporters and scientific partners

World Forest ID is supported by a growing international network of members, funders, public agencies and scientific partners. Together they help build the reference data, tools and standards that make independent origin verification possible. This combined backing strengthens the science, expands practical use, and helps keep our verification infrastructure rigorous, non-proprietary and usable across jurisdictions.

The World Forest ID Consortium is a group of public research institutions committed to protecting forests and other ecosystems using science. Facilitated by World Forest ID, its mission is to scale the data necessary to make forest connected supply chains transparent for all stakeholders, and to support the enforcement of environmental laws. The Consortium aims to expand the realm of relevant knowledge and utilize non-proprietary science and technology for global good.

Consortium members include:

  • CITEmadera – Peru

  • IPB University – Indonesia

  • Meise Botanic Garden – Belgium

  • Institut de Recherches
    Agronomiques et Forestières – Gabon

  • Royal Botanic Gardens Kew – UK

  • The University of Adelaide – Australia

  • Wageningen University – Netherlands
